Automatically backing up Smartmax configurations on to a FTP Server

Smartmax provides a feature to dump all its configurations on to a FTP Server using the following command set:

     unit curnv > /var/cur.nv

The dumped results are collected in /var/cur.nv

The following commands write the dump file to the non-volatile configuration memory.

     nvramedit default /var/cur.nv
     nvramedit commit

An example of backup all configurations as “cur.nv” on ftp server 192.168.2.50, the user name and password of the ftp server are “smart”.

     unit curnv > /var/cur.nv
     ftpput -u smart -p smart 192.168.2.50 cur.nv /var/cur.nv

Retrieve and Write configurations

     ftpget -u smart -p smart 192.168.2.50 /var/cur.nv cur.nv
     nvramedit default /var/cur.nv
     nvramedit commit

Smartmax UDP Keep Alive and Wake up Settings

In order to enhance UDP stack communication within the Smartmax, we have introduced a new configuration option, which provides Smartmax users with more control over the UDP activity and data communication. The user can now enable or disable keep alive and can specify Wake up time in seconds.

Wake up feature will send dummy UDP packets prior to sending any data received via serial port. The modem will send dummy packet twice as per timing set, followed by the actual data.

Keep Alive – This send a dummy UDP packet prior to modem going dormant. If the modem doesn’t send any data over the wireless network, network puts the modem in dormant or standby mode. This time is normally 20 seconds. Setting keep alive to 20 seconds, the modem will send this dummy packet prior to expiry of this 20 second to prevent the modem going dormant.

Enabling this could lead to additional delay in data transfer due to modem sending dummy packet first to initialize the UDP connection with remote site.

Digital I/O Web Automation

This feature allows configuring a local input to drive an output in another Smartmax at two different remote sites. The communication is via IP and requires a private secure network such as maXwan network. For example Input 1 at site 10.0.0.1 can drive Output 1 at site 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.3 as shown below.

NEW Smartmax Firmware NOW AVAILABLE

Smartmax firmware release 1.0.9

A new firmware for Smartmax modem has been released and a copy of the firmware can be obtained by contacting the technical department via e-mail support@maxon.com.au or via phone +61 (0)2 8707 3000. Some of the features such as Digital I/O Automation, I/O logging in to internal memory and enhancements to UDP/IP STACK and inbound IP Filtering have been added to this new firmware.

Newly Added Features

Digital I/O Scheduler

This feature allows configuring the modem digital output control on and off depending on the time and day of the week. Each output has a profile where an ON and OFF time can be set and the modem activates this output automatically as per configuration. This feature automates the Smartmax IO functionality and can be used in lot of applications, e.g. irrigation control, gates control, etc.

I/O WEB Automation:

IO Automation is another handy feature added in the modem that allows automating I/O operations locally and remotely. A change off input can be set to trigger switching ON or OFF an output at two remote sites. This operates over IP and requires all SmartMax modems to use a private network such as maXwan.

e.g. Toggling input 1 on Smartmax A (IP address 10.0.0.1), can be set to switch Output 1 on Smartmax B (IP address 10.0.0.2) and Output 2 on Smartmax C( IP Address 10.0.0.3 )

IO and Modem log file saved in CSV format:

The Smartmax modem saves by default all digital/Analog I/O status in CSV file with date and time stamp. It also saves the modem signal, battery and temperature values.
Maximum Data that is stored is for 3 days with updates set every 1 min.

IP Filtering

IP Filtering allows specifying multiple rules for Smartmax Modem External (WAN) Interface. User can define up to 10 rules that controls incoming connection on specific TCP/UDP Ports as well as IP address.

UDP Keep Alive and Wake Up

In order to enhance UDP stack communication within the Smartmax, we have introduced new configuration options, which would give our customers more control over the UDP activity and data communication side. Now our customers can enable or disable keep alive and can specify Wake up time in seconds where with this feature the Smartmax will send UDP dummy packets prior to sending any data received via serial port. The modem will send dummy packet twice as per timing set, followed by the actual data.

Enabling this could lead to additional delay in data transfer due to modem sending dummy packet first to initialize the UDP connection with remote site.

To obtain a copy of this firmware please contact Maxon Australia on +61 (0)2 8707 30000 or email support@maxon.com.au
