Smartmax firmware release 1.0.9
A new firmware for Smartmax modem has been released and a copy of the firmware can be obtained by contacting the technical department via e-mail support@maxon.com.au or via phone +61 (0)2 8707 3000. Some of the features such as Digital I/O Automation, I/O logging in to internal memory and enhancements to UDP/IP STACK and inbound IP Filtering have been added to this new firmware.
Newly Added Features
Digital I/O Scheduler
This feature allows configuring the modem digital output control on and off depending on the time and day of the week. Each output has a profile where an ON and OFF time can be set and the modem activates this output automatically as per configuration. This feature automates the Smartmax IO functionality and can be used in lot of applications, e.g. irrigation control, gates control, etc.
I/O WEB Automation:
IO Automation is another handy feature added in the modem that allows automating I/O operations locally and remotely. A change off input can be set to trigger switching ON or OFF an output at two remote sites. This operates over IP and requires all SmartMax modems to use a private network such as maXwan.
e.g. Toggling input 1 on Smartmax A (IP address 10.0.0.1), can be set to switch Output 1 on Smartmax B (IP address 10.0.0.2) and Output 2 on Smartmax C( IP Address 10.0.0.3 )
IO and Modem log file saved in CSV format:
The Smartmax modem saves by default all digital/Analog I/O status in CSV file with date and time stamp. It also saves the modem signal, battery and temperature values.
Maximum Data that is stored is for 3 days with updates set every 1 min.
IP Filtering
IP Filtering allows specifying multiple rules for Smartmax Modem External (WAN) Interface. User can define up to 10 rules that controls incoming connection on specific TCP/UDP Ports as well as IP address.
UDP Keep Alive and Wake Up
In order to enhance UDP stack communication within the Smartmax, we have introduced new configuration options, which would give our customers more control over the UDP activity and data communication side. Now our customers can enable or disable keep alive and can specify Wake up time in seconds where with this feature the Smartmax will send UDP dummy packets prior to sending any data received via serial port. The modem will send dummy packet twice as per timing set, followed by the actual data.
Enabling this could lead to additional delay in data transfer due to modem sending dummy packet first to initialize the UDP connection with remote site.

Last week we discussed SmartMax IP STack Auto Mode, this week we will go through the SmartMax IP Stack Manual mode.
With SmartMax Manual mode, you will have to do all your stack configuration via the SmartMax web interface by going to the IP Stack configuration page under Advanced. The modem will activate the serial port and wait for AT command input in order to initiate the PPP and socket connection.
The SmartMax IP Stack AT commands are the same as the Modmax IP Stack AT commands.
For example:
Initiate PPP and Socket connection – AT$$IPCTOS
Stop Socket and drop PPP connection – AT$$IPCTCS
In addition to this you can start and stop the stack by sending an SMS message to the modem via the SIM card’s voice number as follows:
Start IP Stack Mode – SMS Syntax: SMARTMAX.IPSTACK.START
Stop IP Stack Mode – SMS Syntax: SMARTMAX.IPSTACK.STOP
(Note: These SMS commands are only supported IP Stack Manual Mode)

SmartMax IP Stack has 2 modes; auto and manual mode. This week we will cover the IP Stack auto mode.
SmartMax auto mode will behave exactly like the Modmax IP Stack auto mode, as in you can configure the modem as an IP Stack server or client and even have the option of directing your communication on the serial RS232 or RS485 port. The only difference between the Smartmax Stack and the Modmax Stack is that all of your configuration will need to be done via the web interface of the SmartMax.
Which is good in the way that if you know the IP address of your Smartmax you can still do modification or changes to your stack configuration.
Again for any configuration on the SmartMax you will need to use the Mini USB cable connected the SmartMax LAN port.

This week we will discuss what AT commands you can use with the SmartMax and why it is limited.
With the SmartMax every thing is controlled via the onboard processor, so when you type any AT command on the serial port the on board processor takes this command and responds back based on the module status, and for that we had to support the basic common function that any legacy device might send to the modem based on the fact that it is a serial modem.
However if you want to talk to the Module and send more serial commands you can do this via the Web Interface AT commands section or by accessing the module directly via the mini USB port.
Here is a summary of AT Commands that you can use on the SmartMax serial port:
Serial Interface Configuration: at+ipr, at+ifc, at&d, at&c, ats0, at&w
SMS Commands: at+cmgf, at+cmgs
IPStack Commands: at$$ipctop, at$$ipctos, at$$ipctcs,
Diagnostic Commands : ati, at$$rssi, at&v, at+creg, at$$reset
