QLD Dept of Main Roads
The Queensland Department of Main Roads uses the Maxon Modmax modem as part of the communications system for their Weigh in Motion traffic data collection sites.
Weight in Motion traffic data collection sites are used to collect traffic information, including vehicle speed, length, weight and classification (car, bus, truck, road-train, etc).
Some of these sites are located in remote areas where network coverage may be an issue. High gain antennas are used at all sites to assist in strong signal strength.
The sites are dialled on a daily basis using a circuit-switched data call to retrieve data from the traffic loggers.
A diagnostics system has been implemented, including a Maxon Modmax modem connected to a Solaris server. The systems takes advantage of the Maxon Modmax SMS remote control commands, which returns all modem information after receiving an SMS. A Java program interrogates the database for modem phone numbers and sends an SMS to each field modem. The program then interprets the return SMS from each modem, and populates the database with modem information including input voltage and signal strength.
