1.  maXwan Frequently Asked Questions

1.1 What is maXwan?

It is a virtual network which will operate within Telstra’s NextG network (IP WAN). Devices connecting to this network will have a special username (e.g. username@maxwan.com.au) and password. These devices will also use telstra.corp APN instead of the public APN used by normal internet users. Users/modems will be assigned a static IP address when they log on.

1.2 What is IP WAN?

IP WAN network is managed by Telstra to route IP traffic between the wireless devices and the maXwan network.

1.3 Is maXwan a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

maXwan is NOT a Virtual Private Network. It is a very secure virtual network that will operate within Telstra’s NextG network.

1.4 What is the difference between a VPN and maXwan?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a communications network tunneled through another network, and dedicated for a specific network. One common application is secure communications through the public internet, but a VPN need not have explicit security features, such as authentication or content encryption.

On the other hand, maXwan is a private network which operates within Telstra’s NextG network (IP WAN). Devices connecting to maXwan use telstra.corp APN instead of the public APN used by normal internet users. maXwan does not have access to the internet; providing a high level of security. maXwan setup is only point to point which means devices with this network can only communicate with each other.
